cropping and composition

Mon Dec 22, 2003, 1:42 PM
One of the comments on the board here led me to think about how I approach photography. Two things come to mind. The first is composition in camera and the second is cropping. When I shot the kelli series (not all posted yet.) I had the luxury of shooting with a 4x5 studio camera, so I composed loosely in camera knowing full well that I would crop the heck out of it in the "printing stage" The same went with the "Mel" series though I shot that with a 645. Either way I have found that giving myself some room around the subject allows me the freedom to really work the image in the print phase. This leads to cropping. I like to take my images and turn them in several directions to get new perspective on the shot as an example untitled was shot while she was lying down but I feel has better impact in the vertical. All in all don't get bogged down with an image because you " know" which way is up, where the horizon should be etc.

more thoughts to come
